I’ve been doing this for quite a while and let me tell you, photographing special moments of your life has always been my favourite thing to do. People ask me all the time what I take photos of and I tell them I get to take photos of love.
Capturing the special occasion such as photos of a gorgeous belly of an expecting mother is one of these moments. When is the best time to take pictures? Ideally, I’d like to get women when they are anywhere between 30 to 35 weeks along. The reason for this is because they get a nice big round belly and they haven’t had the excess water weight added which helps them prepare in the last few stages of carrying a child. I also find around this time that the expecting mother’s have this absolutely radiant glow about them.
Making sure that everyone is comfortable and collaboration between everyone is key to getting exceptional maternity photos.
What about newborns? There are so many things that happened throughout the first few weeks of a newborn’s life and they are constantly changing faster than you can blink. First and foremost I always suggest to do photos ONLY when both mom and baby are feeling healthy. Once that is been assessed then you figure out a timeline.
Ideally, I’d like to shoot anywhere between 6 to 21 days after birth. The precious vulnerability and the newly changing lifestyles of the family are just a few things that I like to capture. How long does it shoot take? Great question, and the answer is, you don’t know. The second that I show up there I know I am no longer on my schedule, I’m on theirs. Everything now depends on when the new bundle (or bundles) of joy are ready for their very first cameo appearance.
Expect a lot of crying, a little sleeping, a little bit of feeding, a little bit of poop, and a little bit of Pee! …most of this comes from the father. LOL.
